Another puppy question
« on: April 09, 2007, 08:34 PM »
I have noticed that my 12 week old puppy will shake/shiver right before he goes to sleep. Is this normal? I thought maybe he was so tired that his body was jerking...or maybe that he was cold. Any ideas?

Hi Sarah,
I don't know if it is normal or not. I have never seen it with my dogs, but that does not mean its not a normal thing for your puppy. I would keep track of how often it happens and if it seems to get worse. Next time you are at the vet mention it to them with the frequency and see what they think. Good Luck!

Thanks Jeannie. We have an appt. next week and I will ask then. I am not super concerned but did find it odd and thought I would see what others thought here....

As for the other comments, I don't know why I am on as hidden. I barely know what that means. I have been on the forum often, reading posts and all, however, this is the first time I have ever posted anything since I now have questions with my new puppy. If I should change something let me know....

Hi Sarah,

Possibly a silly question, but is it cold where you live?  I live in Colorado and when I brought Kodi home in March of 2005.  We had a couple good snow storms before spring came and Kodi definitely needed extra cushioning/blankets.  I even had a small radiator heater that I put near his crate at night.

Otherwise, I agree w/ Jeannie.  Keep an eye on him and definitely let your vet know what you're seeing.

Enjoy your new boy!

Sarah  ???  I hope you post some pics of your new pup. Where did you get him or her? There have been many new pups lately and some good advice on here.

Well, the weather has been unseasonably cold here in Michigan. I know he doesn't like the cold becuase when he goes outside to potty he does his thing and immediately runs back to the porch saying 'I'm ready to go back in now.' There are even times when I have to take him on the lawn and almost force him to potty when the ground is a little frozen....so maybe the weather is really what's getting him. Thanks for the advice.

Also, my puppy is from Ohio. I don't know how much I am supposed to say on here about his breeder but if I am wrong, I guess it can be deleted. 'Red' (even though he is a light wheaten) is from the Umtali line. He seems to have an excellent pedigree and I am very interested in conformation, lure coursing, agility, and even therapy training. He is my first ridgeback and we have been waiting about three years to get him. Both my husband and I needed to finish school and own our house before we bought a puppy.

I will try to post some pictures soon. It may take me some time to figure it out.....

 ;)

Congrats to you on your new puppy! I would think, as I am also in Michigan, that not only the unseasonably cold weather, but  also the sudden changes in temp may cause all of us to have the shivers :) going from  65 degrees to snow and 35 degrees is a big swing for all of us to get used to!!!

Dependign on how many in the litter, your pup may be very used to a gaggle of siblings sleeping on your pup, but do ask your vet about it too!

Good luck with the puppy & when you get a chance I know every one would love to see a pic!

Yes, I know Nancy is a vet. I mentioned this to Barb but haven't heard back from her yet. I can email them again...also, since we got him at 11 weeks he was only with two other litter mates so there wounldn't be a ton to sleep with. And the shivering is usually right before he falls asleep so I didn't know if his muscles were trying to catch up with him or not.

P.S. I am working on posting pics right now.

You said it is right before he falls to sleep.

Is the shivering like he is chasing something or is it a jerking movement that can happen right before the body enters rapid eye movement deep sleep?
Michelle C

Nothing makes a day more worth it than coming home to a pack of wagging RR's and their kisses......but watch out for those tails they'll get 'cha every time.

Well, there is definitely a difference from when he is shivering to when he is in REM. The shivering occurs right when he lays down (usually on top of us) and then goes away after he is really asleep.

This is my first picture that I am trying to send. If I got it right I will post more...
