I have chosen a puppy
« on: September 16, 2007, 02:25 PM »
I just got back from a looooooong trip to the Karoo (from Johannesburg the trip is 8 hours drive) and i'm happy to announce i have chosen my first puppy (my other two dogs were chosen for me by the breeder- so this is a new experience for me). Her name is Zenzele and she is now only 6 weeks old so please don't be too judgemental because you didn't look too great at 6 weeks either. i'll be posting more pictures after i receive her about 4 weeks from now. She's very boisterous, and as she'll come into my home as my oldest dog, so she needs to be able to be a leader and also indpendant as she'll be spending some time alone during the day. She is a half sister to my dog Naro, they have the same father. I liked her head and her attitude. I'm very excited to see how she develops and grows over the next 4 weeks. I guess you'll have to wait to see more until then too!

KULIMA Zenzele, 6 weeks

I hope she grows into her nose.

Sarah, I am so happy you have found another puppy.  You will never forget Khale and Naro, but it is necessary to move on and this puppy will I am sure do it for you.  I love all her wrinkles!  She looks like she has tremendous bone and I look forward to seeing photos of her as she grows.

Sarah,

I'm sooo happy for you. I know it must be hard for you to get another puppy, but I'm sure this pup will be much loved and treasured.

She is a sweetie.

I'we seen heading "I have chosen a puppy" on "new posts"  but I did not see who opened the thread, and I hoped it was you.
I'm really glad it was you.  :)
BTW, she has nice name.

Regards!

Sarah,

This is such great news! You will never forget, but moving forward is the best thing that you can do in Khale and Naro's memory. It is clear that you have so much to give and little Zenzele will be a wonderful new adventure!

She is sooooo adorable , all those wrinkles and that fat little puppy belly!!!!!
Can't wait to see more photos

Best,
Joanna

Sarah, this is wonderful and she is soooo very cute.  As others have already said, we never replace the ones we loose, but there is always room for a new puppy to love.  I look forward to hearing about all the trouble she causes and seeing more wonderful puppy pictures.

oh my gosh she is the most adorable thing!  I never got to see my boy that young, he was 10 weeks already when I got him.  I had never even seen a RR puppy before him and his litter mates.  My first impression was that these are the cutest puppies on earth, these pictures of your new girl just confirm that!  If only they stayed small longer....

Enjoy her, you have so much love to give, that is one lucky girl....

She is beautiful, she seems to be a heavy puppy and most propably she is going to be a strong bitch. I am sure you are going to love her....I will be happy to see more photos of her since they change so much day by day in that age.

Hi Sarah.

Threre is nothing quite like a puppy to help mend a wounded heart.  Congratulations on your new girl.  It is wonderful to be able to pick out your puppy.  She is very cute.  Xhabbo was very heavy-boned like that as a puppy too, and ended up being very feminine with good bone.

Awesome News Sarah  :D

She is a little dollop & I love that age! Must have been a real joy to visit the litter and having the opportunity to pick your pup is a wonderful situation for you! Although, I am pretty certain Zola picked me & I imagine your new girl would say the same thing if she could talk!

Zenzele means 'do it yourself' in one of the languages of Zimbabwe (i think). The gardner's grand-daughter (they're both from Zim) stays with him on my property and when i told her what the pup's name would be she said 'Huh? What does it mean?' (she's 11). When i told her, she said 'Ooooooh ZEN-zee-lay' (not Zen-ZAY-lay as i was saying it). So it is a real name and it is realitively common. And i'll probably pronounce it incorrectly forever after :D.

I liked the name and when i found out what it meant i thought- hmmmm, odd name, why would i tell my dog to 'do it yourself', but then i realized that since she's a ridgeback she's actually saying it to me!

well she's here! oy and what a handful!

Apree bath:

Kinga is carefully avoiding the Zenzele cooties in his bed. Ooooo that look says soooo much  >:(.

This is about as close as i can get them together right now. Kinga pretty much pretends she's not there.

Even from a young age they go for the crotch.

i hope she grows into that cone head of hers. she's quite vocal and confused as to why she's allowed in the house (i think she never was at the breeder's). she's always underfoot and has a lot of get up and go. i hope i get some sleep tonight!

thanks all for your positive thoughts!

today i came home for lunch and i found her running around the house (i had barricaded her in the kitchen). she had weaseled her way out and greeted me when i came in. i was so suprised she hadn't set off the house alarm. she had this 'who ME?' look on her face. luckily i found only one pee spot (unfortunately it was on kinga's bed, or i should say the bed that used to be kinga's before she staked her claim on it). she had pulled some socks out of my drawer, had thrown some flip flops around my bedroom, had emptied the trash can in my bedroom and chewed up my required reading for my yoga teacher's training class. it could have been much worse. but the complete look of innocence when i walked in the door was priceless.

i'm sort of dreading going home right now. my poor ankles!

Sarah, she's a doll!!! And what a little trouble-maker!! ;D

I have such a love/hate thing with the "who, ME??" look - Oscar was his absolute LOVINGEST on the days we'd come home to some form of destruction. He'd greet us at the door with a faceful of kisses and full body wiggles, like he was trying to destract us for as long as possible so we wouldn't turn the corner and find the trail of pillow stuffing he left... I always loved his enthusiasm (guilt/shame induced or not), even if it was tinged with utter frustration - it's SO hard to be mad at them!!!

I'm envying your once-again full house and can't wait for more stories from the little vixen! I hope Kinga falls for her soon as well - a little pee on his bed won't be nearly so annoying when he realizes what a foxy lady Zenzele is growing into! (LOVE her name, btw)

i'm going to need a bigger bed!
Zenzele has successfully peed on ALL of Kinga's beds and her own. This bed was only about 12 hours new when it was 'christened'.

What a princess! At least she's quiet in this picture.

I am going to attempt to get the 'who me?' look on her as it's extremely entertaining, but i have to catch her doing something she's not supposed to and be holding the camera and not be laughing my head off.

i've posted some pics to flickr... here are some

honestly, i thought my first female was trouble. Zenzele is a NIGHTMARE! She is everywhere at once and into everything. Somehow she remains completely oblivious to the demon in her. though she's quite gentle with her mouthing her teeth are like needles and nothing is safe.

Awww, that's soo cuuuute, she's rolling around in the grass...i'll take some pictures of her being cute...what a sweetheart, she's having so much fun...wait a minute...is that POOP she's rolling in?! AWWWW ZZ!

See the demon look in her eye? See it?! I swear she thinks she can fly, she tries to jump onto the counter to get her food and she jumps into the backs of my legs for fun.

Thank god Kinga is there to give some of it back to her!

Nice action shot, one needs cat like reflexes to avoid her needle teeth and pointed claws!

She is such an instigator!

In any case, because i've been busy with yoga teacher training, neither of them have learned any manners beyond 'sit' so after it's all over (in about 2 weeks) they are both getting crash courses in manners! Serious boot camp!

Wouldnt you agree that nothing confuses a Ridgeback quicker than watching "mom" do yoga? It totally baffles Titus.

I love the pictures!! Kinga looks so mean with his teeth bared like that but I bet he's so gentle with her! What a handsome pair you have there!

I know what you're going through Sarah!  Roux is 3 months old (a female too) and is the same way.  I've read posts on here about notorious counter surfing, always thinking in the back of my mind that I'll be able to teach ours not to do it. . . Well, at 3 months old she ALREADY is into EVERYTHING.  She can now reach the kitchen counters, nothing is safe on the coffee table - she has essentially mapped out the house and can reach any surface.  YIKES.  She can be an unholy terror, but like your Zenzele she's just so cute while she's doing it that it's still hard to get mad. . .

They are having a blast together but I know full well the terror that comes with the puppy days. I think My girl is a little friskier than my boy and she gives him Holy heck all day - but he was pretty settled into the house when she came home.

Yoga is VERY diffucult to do with one dog let alone two. Brando has a habbit of getting right under me and tipping me over. I put Zola in her place (crate) so I can get just a little exercise my self.

Good luck with them Sarah, they are a pretty pair.

Hi All,

As i said in the other thread i took over 180 pics this weekend of dogs. Is that possible?

This photo makes me laugh every time i look at it. Two 8 week old pups from a friend's litter ganging up on the little demon. She loved every minute of it.

Watch out for that sideways movement!

Surpise attack from above! This one also makes me roll of the floor laughing- look at those teeth! And her eyes seem to be closed in anticipation of the impact.

Quietly planning her next attack.

Enjoy!

Oy! ZZ has officially entered her 'bratty' phase. i came home for lunch yesterday and she was so happy to see me that after jumping and bouncing around me she jumped up and sucker punched me in the stomach. With both paws. As she did it, i swear i heard her say "Huh-YA!"

As i got closer to the door i noticed that the brand new doormat was shredded! very methodically i might add, larger chunks were very precisely disected into smaller ones. Obviously her new-found freedom of being allowed outside in the mornings to play with Kinga has gone to her head. She of course was still bouncing around very excited as i admired her work. Ugh! She was calming down! She was snuggling nicely with me the other day!

I did buy two beds, however apparently only one is needed.

Kinga asking nicely, ZZ looking smug.

Bed hog. This is ZZs bed, we know this because one morning in the kitchen while i was at work she flipped it over and tore up the foam inside to the point that it's got a sagging hole in it now. But throw a blankie in and she's snug as a bug in a rug.

Enjoy,
ZZ

I think its wonderful how patient Kinga seems to be with her. They get big so quickly!

another few pics from today, further illustrating the 'princess' (i.e. what i have to live with every day!). it's so hard to live with a prima dona!

not even room for breakfast in bed!

dad's head, mom's body. i think she'll balance it all out though!

good luck getting even this half stack on command, she's always busy concentrating on something else.

Yes, they do!

Bitches are somewhat more challenging than males but very interesting.  I thought that I would always want males but I have really grown to enjoy the girls that I can't imagine life without one.

i hate to ask this but...in what way? i mean challenging not interesting :).

my experience with my females is that they're easier, i suppose on an emotional level. whereas my males are...well boys, and therefore do odd things i don't understand. and they're more clingy. and dependant. geez, maybe that's why i'm not cut out for married life!

right now kinga is sleeping on a rather uncomfortable floor by my side, zz is in her bed making grunting noises that tell me she wants me to turn off the computer and go to sleep. ZZ just makes so much more sense to me!

Hey Sarah,

I am very interested in hearing MaryAnne's perspective on this as well. I love my boy dearly; and I did find living with all boys (the three of them 5 if you counted the boy cats) to be missing something.....and I l LOVE having Zola around. She is not necessarily more animated; but she TOTALLY communicates differently.

I have thought that it was JUST me maybe "personalizing" her behavior ~ I like to rib the boys in the house (especially the human ones) for out numbering me..and I  may as well play it up, b-cuz they do make a good deal of mess  :D and require a lot of attention  ;)

I have lots of "girls" in my family and I notice a huge difference in the way girls and boys interact - the boys (dogs and human alike) are truly like "in one ear and out the other" but man, the girls hear everything and are far more responsive in certain ways.....He is VERY smart, but just not "sassy" in the same way  8)

I do not think I could be with out a boy dog ~ but that said now that I have Zola, I would like to have another female one day as well ~ it is nice to have someone on my side  ;)

Nice perspective, Melissa.  I am interested in hearing Mary Anne's side, too.  I had heard girls are smarter and they lead - and that was from one of the breeders!!  I think I will enjoy having another female in the house.

For a long time I only had girls, but then the boys came a long and I realized that the girls were a lot more "needy".  The boys tended to be more independent and less moody.  Right now I have two intact boys and two spayed females and definitely the boys are a lot easier than the girls who are still moody and require more attention.

Challenging and interesting because the girls tend to be naughtier, yet at the same time funnier.  The boys more laidback.  The girls can be more needy, yet they can be so very independent.  The words bitch and bitchy...once you live with one you have a new appreciation for those words.  Sugar and Spice, and not always nice.  There is simply a lot more drama with the girls.  The fluctuating hormones!   Since I don't have an intact male, my house tends to be the place of waiting for the bitches in heat.  It's amazing, silly and rather disturbing to see the bitch-hump fests.  Gotta wonder about the instincts behind that.  Somehow the girls always seem to get their way when it comes to the boys.  They are princesses or Queenbee wannabees.  The girls are generally smarter but that is because they are thinking with their heads and the boys are thinking with their...well you know.   ;)   The girls are often the better hunters.

Not challenging in the sense that they are harder to live with.   Just so different from the boys.

Trek is usually in the bedroom sleeping and Xhabbo is usually on the closest piece of furniture to whatever room I am in.  If I go to another room she follows and finds a new resting spot.  She not obnoxious but just wants to be with me.

Of course, all dogs are individual so this stereo-type doesn't necessarily fit all.  Simply base on my experience of living with boys first and then getting a bitch and experiences shared by others.

stinky monkey

i've been singing this song over and over to myself today (in my head- not out loud), not to any particular tune.

i have a stinky monkey, her name is little Z
she runs around the park in circles
and jumps in pools of ditchwater that smell really bad
then she jumps in the mud and rolls around
and then refuses to get in the car
and when she finally does she makes the car smell like sewage
and gets mud on the seat.
yesterday she rolled in bird poo and then jumped on my bed
while i was taking a nap.
and last night she had diarrhea
and got me up at 2am
she continued to fart all night
nearly driving me insane it smelled so bad!
then today her eye was all goopy
and she wasn't eating everything in sight
which is probably a good thing.
i hope she feels better
so we can do it all again tomorrow!
when can i get another puppy!

not a great stack but almost. ZZ was a perfect hooligan (according to the judge) at this show. She and kinga were the only ridgebacks so ZZ took BoB and Best Puppy then went on to place 1st Hound Puppy (against a longely beagle), then we went on to place 4th Puppy overall.

for the ~$8 entry fee we won about $50 of dog food so not a bad day for us. however the next show is a championship show on the 17th and we'll have to prepare for that one. no more hooliganism at the shows!

Hey, Sarah, seems like it was a fun day and a job well done! Congratulations!!! And best of luck on the 17th!!!

By the way, I meant to ask you, what is the system of earning a CH title under KUSA? Is it 3 or 4 CCs with a timeframe of a year minimum in between the first and the last win?

Hi Asta,

i think it's three CCs, no time limit, and at least one CC has to be after the dog is either a year or 18 months old.
