Pet peeves about your pet!
« on: May 20, 2008, 09:06 AM »
I'm sure all of your dogs are perfect...right? But there are certain things that my dogs do that drive me crazy sometimes!    >:D  So a little venting is needed.

Griffin (RR): Both pet peeves are very characteristic of the breed but sometimes they just bother me more on certain days.  Like completely ignoring you and also being super sensitive.  I got Griffin as an adult and it has almost been a year (in June), but he has a very guilty conscience to him. He thinks that everything is his fault, whether it is or not.  I am not sure how his first 3 years of his life were, but I don't think they were building his self-esteem up in anyway.

Diesel (lab): Rescue dog from a very bad situation.  He has an oral fixation.  He always has to be carrying something and always drops it at the wrong time.  Like in a bucket of fresh water or by the door I am trying to open so the door gets stuck on it or in the toilet!

Kiddo (aussie mix):  Okay, I guess Kiddo never gets on my nerves, but is does shed a lot and those hair bunnies don't disappear by themselves.

I love my dogs more than anything, they are all lovely dogs and wonderful companions.  Sometimes though such simple things can feel like a brick wall!

Venting done and moving on.  So what does your dog do that bothers you?

I have a couple of huge peeves.  Mac keeps taking things out of my pockets.  If sit for a moment and he is nearby he has his nose in  my pocket and it takes quite a lot to get him out.  He also is a compulsive licker.  If he comes to greet you he always has to lick your hand, bare arm or leg.  The more you object the more determined he is.  It's a game to him, but his mouth is not always very clean :(

Cat takes all the bedclothes off me at night.  I now keep extra blankets nearby so she can take the bedclothes and I have something to cover me.  She also kicks.

Jodi has a paper fettish.  All the toilet paper in the house has to be kept either out of reach or in a lidded box or she will take it and bite huge holes into the roll so that the rest is useless.  Kleenex too have to be kept out of reach, as do the waste baskets or she will dig through the contents and scatter them all over the floor.

Hintza knows that he mustn't bark at my donkey over the fence but he will sneak out the door when he sees her and stand watching until I come out to get him in and then he starts barking furiously and running up and down the fenceline, all for my benefit.  Talk about conveniently deaf!!  I need an e-collar I think.

Needless to say love them all to death!

Oh yah, mine are perfect - NOT  >:D.

Gee.  My pet peeve with Beau (15 months) is his inability to hear me, even though he is 2 feet from me.  Another peeve is that he HAS to sleep right on top of me at all times and he does not move at all - even when I push at him.  How come when he pushes me I automatically move to give him more room?  PLUS, he is a big sissy.  My husband stupidly turned the sprinkler on when the dogs were still in the yard.  Guess what?  Now neither one of them wants to go out there.  Great.

My peeve with Finn is that he is so darn cute I can't get made at him  ::).

Oh.  And the nasty smells  :fart that come from both of them.  Who knew such beautiful dogs  could let out such noxious odors!

I agree with the selective hearing thing.  He can't hear me calling him, or telling him "leave it"  from two feet away, but if I pick up the car keys, no matter how far away he was he comes running!

Also a pet peeve of mine are the head butts and nose pokes.  You'd  think I would learn to to lean over him to give him hugs, but no...  And he will swing that big ol' melon into my face every time...  I'm dodging faster though...  And he constantly pokes EVERYTHING with his darn nose.  Not just butts and crotches, although these are favorite targets.  He pokes me in the back of the head while driving and knocks over things on tables, or pushes them off of tables, with his darn nosy nose.  And pokes it into every  bag of purse that comes into the house, or tries too!

He also tries to steal the treats from my pockets.  And I agree, he is so darn cute, sometimes I'm laughing so hard I can't correct him!

Hehe!

Zeta manage to almost always stand right in front of my feet when I'm moving about.  I also wish she could be a little friendlier towards strangers.

I am not so annoyed by Sali carrying his blankets around and dropping them wherever it suits him, but when he starts om his and Zetas' bed and my bedspread as well...  Sali also jumps at everything that moves, being it bikes, cars, busses, which can be a bit nerve wrecking at times.

Zeta even goes for bags carried by strangers on the street, just in case they have something edible in theirs.   ;D

Good Lord where to even begin....

I'll just start with a couple:

June - uses her nose to poke EVERYTHING.  Constantly knocks everything over with her nose poking,  walks behind me poking my legs, etc...

June - refuses to sleep in past 5:30am.  Whines, Whines, Whines.  When she's bored, we all pay dearly.

J.C. - when I am laying on my bed on my back watching TV, every time, EVERY TIME, he must lay his big body between my legs.  He will force himself between them.  Why can't he just lay beside my legs like a normal dog?  It is like he wants to lay with my legs hugging him.

J.C. - baby barks when he is outside and wants in...it is so high pitched that I always expect glass to start shattering.

J.C. acts like the outdoors is another planet, devoid of air, light, heat.  He acts like going outside is the worst punishment ever.  His baby bark to be let in is ear-piercing.  I'm sure our eardrums are permanently damaged from this.

J.C. insists on finding the one small part of our commonest running area that still has mud (vile, stinky, grey-black mud which seems to have boiled up from hell itself) and delights in running through it.  Repeatedly.

I don't think Junebug ever does anything wrong.  She's perfect.   ;D

Cheers

Have you forgotten her consumption of your very expensive new eye glasses that has now left you relying on your old scratched up and worn out glasses?

That was a momentary lapse.  A peeve requires repeated instances in order to build annoyance.

I wasn't annoyed about my glasses.  I was PISSED!

LOL!! I just love the back and forth messages between Lynne and Mike.  I can totally see my hubby and I in these messages - laugh out loud funny.

I tend to also think Lucy is perfect so looking for fault is hard... then I remember the 2100$ surgery last month because she likes to ingest undies... yes, then there is also the fact that she thinks she'S a missile and propels herself underneath the blanket in bed and it takes both my husband and I to move her because she literally puts all her weight down and WILL NOT MOVE... oh yes, and there's the fact that Princess refuses to walk on anything wet - including wet grass...

But other than that... PERFECTION :)

Tracey -   ;)

How could I foget JC's annoying butter obsession?!  We practically need an armed guard to protect the butter.

And, June's annoying and relentless counter surfing - she is way worse than JC.   She has the nerve to counter surf right in your face - as in you look to your side expecting to see your spouse because you can "feel" another prescense "working" at the kitchen counter with you and you are astounded that you are elbow to elbow with June!  Well, I guess technically this should be Mike's pet peeve since I am never actually at the kitchen counter doing anything since I don't cook.   :D  She's afraid of the water bottle but she is such a determined little bitch that she keeps trying.   :D ;D 8)  My girl has tenacity.

Butter obsession, counter surfing and refusal to get the royal tootsies wet.  Heaven forbid...

Gee, Lynn.  That sooo reminds me of Beau's counter obsession.  I will be working in one section, push the cutting board all the way to the back of the counter, step to my left or right to do something else, turn back AND THERE HE IS RIGHT NEXT TO ME STANDING AT THE COUNTER, AS TALL AS i AM, EATING THE STEAK I JUST CUT.

How on earth did I forget that one?

And he's not really as tall as I am, but darn tootin' close.   ::)

Songai.... his insistence on chewing and destroying things even though he knows it's forbidden.  Plus his cost/benefit analysis abilities.  He almost always knows when he's breaking the rules and he's clearly doing whatever he's not supposed to be doing anyways because the reward in his mind outweighs his punishment.  It takes everything I have to stay ahead of this dog, if I give him an inch he'll take a mile.  God help us if he's bored.

Pemba's able to open the door to my closet no matter how tightly I shut it, and she's taken to stealing shoes if I leave her in the house when I go out.  She used to steal them just to keep them nearby and smell them, now she steals them and chews them because her brother chews things.

Great thread!!

Brando, and his food searching & creative trash sourcing, hiding and tearing apart is my biggest pet peeve for him. I also have a Ridgeback, who does not hate the out doors, but does cry if I leave him alone out side and rarely spends time in the wonderful yard I selected for him.(unless I am out there with him) He also cries like beeker from the muppets if I crate him; but we still work on that with the spray bottle and  it is getting better.  ::)

Zola, is a peach...I am truly hard pressed to think of anything she does - but maybe life with head strong brando makes her look like an

I wish that both of them would refrain from LICKING my windows and sliding Glass doors!!!

I love that they are bed hogs, love the head butts, love thier devotion, oh so soft sweet faces, thier unconditional love, ,ability to kick it into high gear when we are out for a romp and then snuggle up for a long day in the arm chair napping...the list of things I LOVE far out weighs any little pet peeve ~ but there are days!! Guess they call them "dog doys" for good reason!!

Capone and I will be strolling along on our leisurely evening walks and he feels the need to walk between my legs completely tripping me.  I have almost fallen flat on my face several times.  Also, he whines every time I open a cupboard or the refrigerator in the kitchen.  He always assumes he's getting a treat and acts as if we are starving him.  But he sure is cute!   ;)

Max NEEDS to be invited into bed or on the couch. Being that we got him when he was 6 I have no idea where he got this from. It SOUNDS cute but when its 4 am and he is whining at the edge of the bed until we lift the covers and tell him "Max, UP" it gets old! Otherwise he will whine till the cows come home.

Shody - Royal tootsies are right! Forget about getting them wet.

Max is a real city dog. He only goes on the grass to do his business and then he runs away from it like the plauge.

He thinks people on bikes are squirrels.

He MUST circle 3 times before he lays down. Cute most of the time except when he's stepping over you on the bed. (He is out to prove dogs too can have Obessesive Complsive Disorder).

And yes, how OBSSESED I am with him  ;D

Morgan,
I hear ya about the going in between the legs - Lucy does it ALL THE TIME - so much so that we named it 'SLINKY SLINKY' (cause she slinks like a snake).  Whenever we come home - it's slinky slinky three or four times. She simply loves to do it when she is happy.   It is such a weird habit - I thought Lucy was the only one....

At least Max will do his business in the grass before he runs away.  JC will do anything to avoid the potentially damp grass, including doing his business in our landscaping lava rocks!  My son HATES doing poop patrol in the rocks.   :D  :D

This is a fun thread and I have enjoyed reading all your responses.  My biggest pet peeve is that I will be standing the pouring rain and Kumba sits on the back stoep watching me waiting for him to come do his business. When it is sunny or dry he will be out and in business completed but raining, even a little drizzle and no way no how so I have to trudge back and get the leash. Then he looks like I am abusing him taking him for a wallkabout in the rain.  The other things I can't really call pet peeves because he is still a puppy. If he is still countersurfing, stealing shoes, dragging his bed all over the place when he is older then I will reconsider that one hehe.

Hmm. Bed eating. Blankets, rugs, or anything else in, on, or next to her crate that she can get at. Stealing food from the toddler. Pretending she doesn't know she's expected to sit at doors and wait for ok, or lay down at people meals, just as every other time. And of course there is that SMELL!!  :fart

Oh, and the fact she inspires me to stay up on this forum until past midnight...  :-[

Leo - I wish he would leave the coushions on the couch !!  If he is angry that I am leaving he will go up on the couch and start throwing the coushions on the floor.  Every one of them.  I guess I should be greatful he does not eat them.

Tanzi - Due to her allergies, she licks alot.  Of course there is nothing worse than going to sit on something and finding a wet spot under your butt.  Or better yet going to get into bed and having to throw everyone out and change the sheets because she has been laying there licking her feet so much the wet spot is HUGE.

Kumar ( I know not an RR )  but he has decided that when he is angry that we have left him he eats paper and leaves a mess of it all up and down the hallway.  Books, Magazines, newspaper, ect.....

So there are my pet peeves, one for each dog.  Thank god the cats at least behave.

Hmmmm...where to begin?

Khale used to lick her feet all the time and she didn't have allergies. Slurp, slurp, slurp- drove me MAD! I actually had a 'stop licking' command.

Kinga likes to jump up and try to kiss me when i get home,- this is a RR thing- the flying kiss. However, the more i turn away and say no the more insistent he is to do it. And he likes to add paws too, on my clean clothes! Kinga also likes to sit and whine quietly, even if i'm in the same room, he lies down puts his chin on his paws and quietly whines, and whines, and whines. i have no idea what he wants. He also loves getting into garbage.

ZZ- good lord she's MAD! MAD i tell you! Her precision when it comes to destruction is amazing. I think i shared about the tearing the new door mat in half, then in quarters, then in 1/8 then 1/16. Now she's discovered how fun it is to dig up the irrigation system (of my rented house) and drag the hose all over the lawn, then go to each tube and chew the tube, then go to each stake/spigot and uproot the stake and dismantle the spigot piece by piece. I come home and diligently pick up all the pieces and give them to the gardner with a sheepish expression :-[. She also loves to snuggle with me on the bed, hogging the pillow and sticking her feet in my face.

but what can you do  ;D?

Oh no they do not my friend.

Hmm.  Pet Peeve for Toby.   :dog:  Let's see.  Oh Yah.  Getting uop at 5 am and coming in to the bedroom to sit right in front of the crate to wake up the puppy - he did it to Beau and he is carrying on the tradition with Finn.  Taunting the dogs and just letting them get close enough and then he takes off and climbs up the back of the furniture to get away.  And the list goes on and on.  He is the true   >:D in the house.

This is totally my Basenji. She's small enough to fit behind furniture that the Ridgebacks cant. She'll jump on the sleeping head of which ever dog is closest then go hide leaving them a confused mess. Or she'll harass them whenever they're supposed to be calming down. I swear she's trying to get them to rebel when we tell them all "in the room" (which means they stay in the living room while we eat in the dining room) She swats at each of them then makes little efforts to cross the boundary.
Spray bottles work on Basenjis too... ;D ;D ;D

Denise and Kelley,  Pixie my Yorkie plays a version of this game too.  She gets one of Capone's toys in her mouth and stands in front of his crate barking and taunting him like "Ha, ha, you're in there and I'm out here."  I swear she has become more of a devil since Capone arrived.

Boy do I have a few....my Male Nanji for instance, when he eats, he flings kibble everywhere, it seems to be flying out of his big ol' flappy jaws, it just goes all over the place.  I think he gets entertained watching me pickup kibble when he is done eating as well.  My female, Akilah, will sniff things on my coffee tables and sometimes push them off in the process.  She sniffs all around it, and under it, and when she comes back, thats when it falls off.  Once it falls, she bolts to one of her pillows across the room and just stares at it on the floor (sometimes its rolling away, ect.) and then back at me, and keeps looking at it and back at me for a few minutes, waiting for me to go pick it up and put it back.  She will not move until I have put "the scary loud thing" back where it was.  I really think both of mine gets amused watching me pickup after them, humph, kinda reminds me of kids!  ::)

Can empathize with you all, but nobody has mentioned the roll.  Imagine being in a hurry in the morning and taking your dogs for a quick walk in the fields before dashing off for an appointment.  Inevitably one disappears and comes back looking so pleased with herself and covered in the most disgusting smelly stuff imagineable.  It seems it's always when you are in a hurry that they find something particularly delicious to roll in which necessitates a complete hosing or worst case scenario a full bath.

after i read this yesterday i went home last night and discovered another one...

both my dogs like to wait while i open the door and i'm usually very firm that i go in first. when i get through the threshold they bolt through then lead the way down the hall (i need to deactivate the alarm when i get home) and as they go down the hall they stop and look back to make sure i'm following, but totally impede my progress down the hall! they do it everywhere, pushing ahead then standing in my way! urg!

Horse poop, Kathy, that's a big treat!!  Actually I asked a vet once who I used to ride with if it was bad for them and he assured me that it wasn't.  They are after the grain that in the poop!  Now cow patties, that is something else.  That really is the pits!

OK, you got me.  June is ALMOST perfect, but her habit of eating poop, mostly JC's freshly-laid pile of warmth is just too disgusting for words (which is why I found the words....).

JC's kisses are accepted without qualification around our house.  June's kiss attempts are met with suspicion and fear.

Cheers

You need to sprinkle a little Accent or meat tenderizer on June's food so that her poop doesn't taste so good.  There is also something you can get from the pet store that is supposed to work.  I have one that does it too but I usually manage to forestall him by scooping more often.

Adolfs tenterizer or Deter will work!! Actually, they will have to feed it to JC so June will not heat his poop.

Does she eat hers too?

Yeah, Mike, that is pretty disgusting. I think I'd still prefer her eating it to having her roll in it, though!

Don't know if Kelley wants this one told but... here goes! Titus used to urinate into his own mouth when he was first let out in the morning. He hasn't done it in a while though. Nasty. Also, when he is invited up on the sofa, he won't go until you pop him lightly on the muzzle. He'll sit there and beg and beg, but won't move until he gets a light slap. Strange dog.

ewwww Mike.  I had one that would poop, turn around and eat it before I got a chance to scoop it. I tried pineapple in the food and it worked.  blech. now that is more disgusting than the horse poop, yuck.

Caroline, never had one roll in cow dung.  I wonder why they love to roll in the most disgusting stuff ever.

Well, I have to break everyone's perception of perfection in ol' Junebug, don't I.

She only does this with the big man's biscuits.  Now, they both love to go on "treasure hunts" around the neighborhood, but those specimens are usually dry and crunchy.

Everyone ill yet?

My current pet peeve with Junebug is that she won't be down command.  I have JC bouncing up and down like a crazy person while I'm trying to get June to be "down".  I've gotta keep working with her, and she will eventually get it (unless she is getting it but is simply trying to drive me slowly insane).

Cheers

OMG!  I don't know what inspired me to read this topic...but it was probably becuz' I needed laughter before I signed off.
I have a dog named Kozi who does the same thing as June...and one reason I don't welcome any kisses, licks, etc!  She is from a California breeder...must be the lifestyle?!?!  :D

Then there is Bakari, my little forever puppy - she follows me everywhere...seems to be more needy than the others.  She has taken over the spot that my beloved Chuma slept in. Even when I get up in the middle of the nite...she follows me...waits on the bathroom rug..and then returns, to be covered before I get back in bed.  Since Chuma has gone to the RBridge she now howls after the 3rd ring of the phone and until it stops.  What'z up wit'dat????

ZZ - the lt. purple pup who never left from the last co-owned litter...nearly 2 years ago. Everywhere she goes, inside our out...she moves at full-throttle!  Like a top-fuel eliminator dragster from my past.  I'm working her in basic ob and hoping to do Rally this year with her and Bakari.  Another petpeeve of ZZ - she comes to me, stands up on the chair and licks my head - especially when on the computer.   :-\  sigh.

What is it about glasses?  And it's always the most expensive ones, just like shoes.  I can't tell you how many pairs of prescription glasses I have lost to various puppies in the past.  And somehow the ones with a shoe fettish always went for my really really expensive Bally shoes.  Now that I wear mostly sneakers none of them have the least bit of interest.

Thanx Caro...I had forgot my 1st RR (at 2 years of age) decided I didn't need my leather motorx boots.  Everytime I returned from a ride he would chew the left heel off the boot.  Continual replacement of the heel cost almost as much as the boots.   ::)  I finally left them in the garage with the bike...oh yeah...the helmet strap was also replaced a couple times.

The initial rage has passed.  Okay, who am I kidding - it was passed minutes after the discovery.  There is something about those RR eyes that just do it to me - that and the old 'put my head on your lap Mom so you feel really bad about being stern with me' routine.

I'm a total sucker...

Oh, many pairs of glasses have bitten the dust around here.  Don't get me started.

My current pet peeve is this:  The four of us (June, J.C., Lynn and I) are sitting in bed watching shows.  Every time I have to get up to recharge my coffee, do laundry, etc., the dogs need to get up too because we all MUST BE TOGETHER ALL THE TIME.  It takes us all five full minutes to rearrange after all this, and by then, its almost time for coffee....

plus it appears that June has become a woman, if you know what I mean.   :o

Cheers,

Okay, my pet peeve is that all of my dogs lately have entered into a competition of who gets to lay down on top of me first - I swear, my poor bones might not take it one day. And if I lay on the coach, Dodo comes and lays down at my feet, then slowly squeezes into the gap between me and the coach, and slowly takes over - one twist and turn at a time.... I think I need to take some radical measures, cause soon I might be sitting on the dog bed in front of TV while my hounds will sleep on the coaches...
