What does your Ridgeback "help" you with?
« on: July 14, 2008, 09:29 PM »
Today, Adam and I were outside working on things that needed to get done and had the dogs out with us.  The other two found something to keep themselves busy (chewing bones, investigating, playing with each other), but Griffin wanted to "help" us all afternoon.

1. He laid in front of the fence that we were trying to fix
2. Wanted to help me weed in the garden
3. Made sure he stood on the grassy area that I was to mowing next, time after time
4. Finally, he wanted to help us paint the picnic bench!

Its nice that he wants to be close and into everything that we are doing, and trust me, he is too cute while trying to help!  But a little space might be nice.

So what does your RR "help" you with?

Most of the help I get is centered around:
1)  Preparing meals
2)  Unpacking groceries
3)  Restocking the cookie jars -dog cookies, that is
4)  Washing dishes-this means licking any dishes within reach in the dishwasher
5)  Taking out the trash, ususally all over the kitchen floor
6)  Cleaning the kitchen countertops-saves me tme packing up leftovers
Oh yeah, I do get quite a bit of help with the house cleaning, especially vacuuming the floors and washing the windows.

Making the bed - by the time I have it almost right, the girls have rearranged it.
Cleaning the dishes before they go into the dishwasher although I found a missed bean in the filter once.
Taking the washing out to the line - they like to get the pegs out ready for me

Beau would like to be a taste tester of every meal going in and out of the kitchen.  And just to make sure it was okay, he will lick the silverware and the dishes as they are being put in the dishwasher.

Finn thinks he needs to prune the citrus trees for me.]

And both of them believe they are helping with the yard by making sure the pit stays free of anything green.

After having cut down a tree in my garden I was cleaning up all the debris.  Being busy chucking things onto a sheat of plastic (so I could get it into the van and to the rubbish tip without too much mess), it took a while before I realised that Sali was busy (partly) behind my back, dragging everything he could get hold of off the plastic and heaping it nicely to one side.  When I told him off, he started digging a big hole where I had just put all the dirt back in the hole after the roots of the tree.

Zeta is also great help in the garden.  When I prune the roses, she keeps trying to help me by nipping off the rosebuds.

Capone moonlights as my personal trainer.  Just when I get home from a long day of work and want to be lazy, he drags me to the dog park or for a rambunctious walk. I swear I have lost weight just chasing him around the house after he grabs somethings he's not suppose to.

my dogs like to help me with groceries and laundry, e.g. they escort me back and forth between the car and the kitchen ensuring that the grocery bags are heavy enough by inserting their heads into the bag as i'm walking. and they also like to make sure i get all the laundry from the laundry basket into the washer and then out on the line. i hear they also supervise the gardener sitting on the lawn and watching everything he does. yes, my dogs are great supervisors.

Yuck is right, Angie.  Mine would like to help with that, too - however, one of them stuck their nose in the closet doorway and got whacked by the cat.  It scared them as they did not expect that.  So...  they don't mess with that closet anymore  ;D

Shelby was a bit worried about the cat’s winter wait problem, so she helpfully ate their brand new box of biscuits (hmm she didn't seem to move around much after that). She is such a dedicated girl too, she absolutely refuses to sleep on her bed in our room because, she is so worried that I will then have to get up to a cold couch in the morning...

Hmmm, mine do many things for me around the house. I have 8 who make sure every crumb is off the plates before they are put in the washer, we call this our "pre rinse" cycle. I have 2 who insist on pulling clothes out of the basket to help me "fold" . I have several who GLADLY help me plant new shrubs, of coarse they only help dig the holes! I have 1 who either really, really wants to help me take a shower or is totally convinced my shower stall has an escape door, AND then I have all 8 who think their help is needed when I am sitting on the potty!

Ah, yes...  Mine do many of these things.  plate rinse, laundry folding, warming couch and bed, bathroom visits, gardening jobs, giving the bed that "just right" look after making it, shredding cardboard boxes to make them fit in the recycle bin easier...

And being ever helpful, they follow me constantly, from room to room because you never know when their help just may be needed...

I almost forgot ALL 8 (4 Ridgebacks and 4 Ibizan Hounds) insist on giving my car windows and glass doors FRESH nose art when I clean the old nose art off. I mean really, what kind of self respecting dog wants to ride in a car thats windows have last months "art"!!?

LOL! I have been known to hand Eko the credit card offers while going through the mail ... He also likes to keep wildlife safe by ensuring that all plastic is ripped into tiny pieces that can't cause harm.

He vacuums the floor - there is never any cat food to be found on the floor. He also serves as a cat food taste tester. Looking for poison, I presume. Altruistic pup, isn't he?

I'm about to have the downstairs bath remodeled, and the sink's been removed and they stuffed paper towels into the waste pipe opening.

Songai keeps 'helping' with the remodeling by pulling out the papertowel and eating it - then shoving his nose into the waste pipe and inhaling deeply.

yuck!

Lucy likes to help me out by reminding me that exercise is good - that even when I truly DO NOT want to get out there and walk or run - well, I don't have a choice.

Lucy also likes to help me cook. Placing her head strategically between my body and the butcher's block, she ensures that pieces of food do not fall unto the floor.

Lucy loves to garden.  Pulling the snow peas off the vine - well, actually destroying the whole plant by yanking the snow peas... nothing like fresh produce.

You know, I could go on and on ... with a 14 month old curious RR in the house... there is always a funny anectode... and a smile on my face.

Junebug is very helpful.  She helps everyone keep their shoes picked up (or they will end up shredded).  She makes sure anything on the coffee table is not in our way in case we'd like to lay down on the couch --- nose pokes take care of that.

What a fun thread - I have enjoyed reading the posts.  Kumba also likes to help with the grocieries from the car to the house.  Often he will try and take one of the bags to take the load off me and it is very considerate of him.  I mentioned to Bruce I would love a pool and so far Kumba has dug enough craters that we wouldn't need to hire anyone to dig the hole, we could just ask him to keep digging.  He counter surfs to make sure there is nothing there that will impede any cooking being done or anything that might harm us while we are sponging off the counters.  He is a walking vacuum cleaner.  He knows that socks disappear in the washing machine so will always try and take care of the ones left behind, I think he feels sorry for them that their partner went into the washing machine hole in the sky. He makes sure the dishes are clean before they are washed and tries to make sure they were properly cleaned when finished. Prunes the trees that are hanging over the fence.  Will help with mowing by eating the grass - (it's a funny thing, he is a grazer. Our other two were like that, just liked to graze on grass like cows.). I am going to teach him how to polish furniture next and fold the laundry instead of depositing it in piles all over the place.  He is a very helpful boy.
