Mask or no mask?
« on: July 18, 2008, 08:22 PM »
Just wondering what your preference is.  Do you like Ridgebacks with the black mask or without a mask?

I am partial to black masks myself.  I think it gives the Ridgeback's face such dimension and character.  But I have seen some clean faces that a quite charming too.

I love the black masking.  I think it gives more to look at in the face.  Although I have to admit to loving livers.

I used to ALWAYS think that all my ridgebacks would have a mask, till Isis arrived to my house, and then so did Meile. Neither of them have a mask, but they have lovely pigmentation!!! Isis has no mask, but she has this dark mascara around her eyes (just like Tonks who we met couple of weeks ago). I think it is the mascara who gives most character to their faces! Absolutely stunning! Even though I never evaluate dogs based on their mask, I love no mask ridgies just as much as livers!

I love the mask but I have grown to appreciate a nice liver also.

Livers can have masking, it is just brown.

Oivia has some brown masking

I have two lovely clean faced RR's but I started off with a black masked and widow peaked RR mix.  I always thought I would have black masked RR's too.  Now I don't care either way.

I started out wanting my RRs to have black masking, but ended up with none.  I agree that the mascara around the eyes is really what sets the face and expression off.  My liver wannabe has brown mascara and her son has heavy black mascara which really sets off his eyes.

I love my masked, & the way their black fades into a deep rich brown gradually ~ but like many have also developed a great like for the clean faces and livers - it is all in their expression to me.....

One of the things that makes Tonks face So distinctive, is that not only does she have mascara, but also her lips are black and her coat is a lighter wheaton making her eye liner and lips pop out against that coat of hers.

Makes a wonderful look and she is a very pretty girl!!! I have not seen that often, but it is striking!!!

That's an interesting observation, MaryAnne! In all honesty I would have not noticed the richness of pigmentation on the muzzle (paid attention) if you did not point it out! I'm curious to go back and look at some livers at our shows and see if I can spot some dark brown masking :) I guess when I look at photos, I always leave room for error in color - the media used (film vs. color slide vs. digital), the lighting (nothing worse than midday sun), and the photoshop features (like a bad habit of exaggerating contrast or oversaturating the color) can make a dog look very different from what it is in real life.

I would sure love to see more livers with a dark brown mask on their faces!

Our first RR, Meisie, has a mask.  I love the look and think that the black eye liner really set off her eyes.

We had our hearts set on another masked RR when we went looking for a show/performance male.  Unfortunately, there were no masked males in the litter from which we had hoped to get our next RR.  The pedigree and performance background of the litter, as well as the personality of one of the pups, swayed us to choose a clean faced male.  So, sans mask, Nitro came home with us.

I have now grown fond of the monochromatic, clean face and absolutely love Nitro to pieces....but, I still think I prefer a nice mask and those darker ears that come along with it.  To me, it just seems to really frame the face and make the dog's face seem so much more expressive.

I love both.

The only thing I am not too fond of is what I call panda eyes (I have no idea what to call it...when the dark around the eyes gets too big)

;) I agree Annette, I like the black to be just on the eye brow in some cases, or seeing them very thinly lined; but not heavy around the eye like a panda. Good example  :)
My boy has a big white splotch on his chest that closely remembles a "bat" ~ and Zola has a "wink" mark  :) She had one white toe, but she out grew it.....
I really like the light wheatons as well.

I love Alfred's reply!  Alfred, you have truly evolved!  I've had the gamut of colors (with the exception of liver...perhaps someday), and it simply has never mattered to me.  Things strike me about puppies/dogs and color never enters my mind...it is a mere blip in both the standard and my personal "strive for perfection" eye.  I appreciate clear-faced dogs, as much as masking....and heads and expression are very important as well.  I agree with Asta that pigmentation can be key to expression, and I love that heavy eyeliner look as well.

Gayle...knowing both you and Nitro...it warms my heart you set aside such a cosmetic desire and ultimately chose Nitro, who I know has brought you great joy and competitive fun.

As someone that initially, and typically, wanted a second ridgeback that looked just like their first (my first was red, not really masked, but with black bib and faint widows peak, and grizzled tail, very little white), I ultimately went down the road of many color combinations and never looked back.  For me, it is simply wonderful to embrace the diversity, as Alfred said.

I've got one of each - a masked and a livernose. Mind you, Cranberry's mask is more grey than black, bless her...
I don't think I could choose between them, to be honest!! I think it's the character behind the dog's eyes that gives them their beauty.

Saying that, I think my boy Red has changed a few people's minds on the livernose... He is stunning (Says his VERY bias Mum  ;D)

I of course love the masks - as Lucy my first RR has a prounounced mask - but who am I kidding - I'd be completely lying to you all if I said I was going to limit my choice to one type.  Put me in the middle of a litter - I guarantee you - I will love them all and will want them all to come home with me... not having yet developed an eye for the 'perfect' RR - I'm a complete sucker... which BTW - I will have to change for when I get my next RR in a few years...

Capone has a clean face. He is my first RR and I picked him out because he was cute! He is not a show dog. He's just my very spoiled, very loved pet.  ;)
