How Tonks spent summer vacation
« on: August 14, 2008, 01:22 AM »
We're still in the midst of it, but here are a few:

fishing in San Isabel forest, CO

little hike in the black hills of SD

checking out the scenery in the Badlands

more Badlands, sans RR

Ok, I really liked the badlands. Such a beautiful, untouched place. Mt. Rushmore was impressive too, but a bit on the touristy side, and no doggies allowed, so Tonks had to wait for us in her crate. Maybe she'll get in some water tomorrow at Mom's.

Wow, Robin, great photos! Tonks had such a nice summer vacation - wow! You had her off leash on all the walks?

Thanks for the nice comments. I wish I could say Tonks was off-leash a lot, but mostly for the pictures. The prarie dogs (my 2yo called them "stuffy dogs") in Badlands park area carry Sylanic (sp?) plague, which is transmittable by fleas, so we had to be careful. I'm sure Tonks would say she spent too much time in her crate in the back of the Av. getting from place to place. With all 5 humans, there's no room for her in the cab. :-(

Lucky Tonks, looks like a dream dog vacation to me!

But wait! Is that wet doggy paw imprints I see on that rock?  ;)

Beautiful pictures, makes me soooo envious!

Good eye, Sonia! Yes, I was trying to get her in a stand-stay on the rock, but after I jumped back to the path, she was not about to stay on that slick rock surrounded by WATER!!  :o

I think a future vacation will have to be a backpack trip through the badlands. Such a big place, I'd love to experience it closer-up.

We went out on my mom's pontoon in MN last night, and you'd have thought we were torturing her by bringing her along. She ~almost~ jumped off the boat when we stopped for a little swim, but Mike didn't want to get clawed trying to haul her back in from deep water, so he held her back.

Just got around to uploading the rest of my vacation RR pics to photobucket, thought I'd share a couple.

Tonks resisting getting wet, even if everyone ELSE was in the water!

Her thoughts on boats...

The farthest I coaxed her in was up to her wrists, then she quickly ran back to shore and shook off as if she was drenched! Poor dog!

She's sp cute!  Just like my dogs, hate the water.  But Leonidas actually loved the boat last summer, and kept trying to jump in it all the time.

Oh my! "Her toughts on boats" is just priceless.

Oh! How unbearable! To be SURROUNDED with water... Maybe if she keeps those eyes closed long enough, the water will just disappear.  ;)

Robn,

What gorgeous pictures!!!  Looks like you all had a wonderful time.  Lucky Tonks.  Even with the water, I'm sure that she is so thrilled to be included in the "family" vacation.  Not all dogs are so lucky to be thought of that way.  Can't wait to see next year's vacation pictures with the family.

And this is Tonks trying to sneak into the bed while Robin is not looking:

Oh, Denise, Tonks is a looker, and she is also very elegant!

And Chaos... Well he was head over heels with Tonks (he tried to dominate every male in the park and had to be restrained) as well as Dodo (who lifted his leg for the second time in his life - the first time was RR rodeo). They guys had so much fun with Tonks!!! I think I should steal her, LOL!

Heeeeyyy.  Beau has only lifted his leg twice, too.  What a coincidence.  Dodo must have been trying to impress her.

I think Beau and Tonks are exactly the same size.  27 inches, 75 pounds.  She is a lovely girl.

Ok, and this will be my last addition of photos for this thread:

HOW TO MAKE YOUR VACATION COUNT:

1. Look cute at all times:

2. Always be surrounded by a group of good friends so that everyone knows you're popular:

3. Learn something new, such as swimming:

NOW..... I know a lot of you do not believe that each and every RR can love water! I have one advice to you.... Send them two me! Couple of trips to the dog park with my gang could get a brick swimming, leave alone a ridgeback, LOL!!!!! So come on over!

Xhabbo says no way in hell will she go in the water, she discovered that being submerged in water was bad when she was 4 four months old, and swore never again!  She is an Evie daughter and you AREN'T supposed to get more than your toes wet, and even that is questionable but sometime necessary.   ;)

Trek on the other hand, maybe....definitely if you toss food in.   ;D

I will agree with that.  Beau will never go in the water just to go in.  However, if his people are in it or his buddy, Espen is, he will charge right in.  And once he's in there, he becomes some terrible sea monster!!

Terrible Sea Moster  :D :D :D I'd love to see that!!! But isn't it nice to see them splashing in waves? You waves are trickier - they're salty and they hurt if they get in the eyes. So props to Beau!

I take him to this freshwater lake near my house and he goes crazy.  He splashes, steals sticks and balls and wants to drown other dogs.  Oh.  And there is the time he ran down the Border Collie and rolled him in the sand  :D.  I spent 10 minutes apologizing and explaining I had no idea what had come over my usually mild mannered dog.

Something about the water makes him become possessed.

Yes, water is very liberating to my dogs as well. I have to always watch and make sure they do not get too rough, especially if there are dogs who are not too fomfortable with roughhousing in the waves, LOL!

Thanks for so many nice comments, and to Asta for taking and posting those great pictures! And no, you cannot have her, even if she HAS been moping around the house since we've been back! It took her a while to sleep off that all-night party!  :D :D :D  Doesn't she look a little drowsy in the dog show pics from Sunday? With that show collar on, she almost looked like she belonged there!  ;)

I also swore she would never go swimming voluntarily, especially when she wouldn't come in by ME! I guess I need to grow more fur and run around on all four legs! :D ;D ;D :D

I told my mom about her swimming, and she asked if I threw her in!

I don't know, MaryAnne, peer pressure has more bang to it than it might seem at first ;D

Ya might have to get Xhabbo drunk first so she forgets her senses.  You just don't understand the power of the Evie genes.  Abhorrence of the water is a strong trait share by most Evie get.  They've been around a strange few RR and non-RR friends that go in the water, and the peer pressure has yet to lure them in!   ;D

I think Isis, Chaos and Dodo must have manipulated Tonks into going in the water.  That is just crazy!  She must need Xhabbo there to keep her on the right path of not getting wet.   ;)

Did I mention I like nice dry clean Ridgebacks so I never encourage them to be water dogs...brings back too many memories of stinky, wet, muddy Golden Retriever....very messy.

Tonks is very cute young girl ... I like your photos from your vacations ... the photo from black hills of SD is like you have been in Slovenia :) ... very similar landscape as in my environs.
And Asta posted astonishing photos of your beautiful girl ... I really like her face :) and her long legs :)
