Thulani's sailing vacations 2008
« on: August 29, 2008, 04:57 PM »
Here are some of the photos of our vacations this summer. Thulani was not so satisfied as we were (it was too hot)  but he had also great time :).
Location - Croatia - Adriatic sea - Mljet and Lastovo islands. Take a look:

Here is a short video clip from same vacations with ethnic music of Croatia and some great shots of ridgeback's swimming abilities and techniques :).

Thanks very much to all of you for your response on my post. :)

Is Thulani a lapdog? No, he is not! The only time he sit in my wife's lap was this summer on the boat - otherwise he put only his head in ours lap. :) That was the reason I post this two or three photos where he sit in the lap. He was so cute ... he has 48 kilos and sometimes acts like a small 5 kilos dog.

Yesterday he won his first CAC on dog show in Trbovlje in Slovenia. There were 340 dogs on the show from 18 different European countries.
Today on the same event he didn't get anything. The judge said he is too big! And he was/is right! In written description of Thulani both judges (one from Sweden and other from Slovakia) point out his excellent proportions, angles, muscle structure, movement, beautiful head, excellent ridge ... but both point out he is too big. I agree with them :).
I will post some photos from this show later when I get them.

This was our last show. Thulani is really too big (72 cm high and 48 kilos) and besides he doesn't like shows very much! :) The only place where he is happy is in the woods.

Thanks again for your lovely answers on my post.

Congratulations on Thulani's CAC.  I need my calculator to translate cms. into inches, but if you think he is too big I commend you for recognizing it and not continuing to force him to do something he doesn't like.  Wish others were so kind to their dogs.  He certainly has a wonderful life with sailing, swimming and hiking.  Lucky dog!

Caroline
As I know 72 cm is aprox. 28,3 inches .... standard says 27 inches is max!!! ... and 48 kg is about 105,8 pounds (lbs), standard says 80 lbs is max ....

Asta, it is so easy to 'go on vacation like that'!!! Adriatic sea is not so far from Lithuania :) ... so, when you next time come in Europe just include Adriatic sea in your vacation ... and I would like to help you find right places to visit! :)
And I can't help myself ... Thulani is great dog, great character ... we love him so much!

WOW. It looks like you have ALL had a great holiday.

May I say that Thulani does,'t actually look over big to me. Maybe because here in the UK we seem to be getting bigger overall.

He looks well conditioned and doesn't look overweight at all for his proportions. In fact, I would go as far as to say that he looks just right for the showring.

Thanks very much for your opinion. But I respect international standard of Rhodesian ridgeback - Thulani doesn't fit to this standard in two points (hight and weight) so it would be inappropriate from me to ignore what Barnes have thought when he 'made' this breed. And I agree with him ... ridgebacks should be light and fast ... like all scenthounds ....
Barnes was so moral that he didn't show his own dogs cause they were, as he said, too 'aggressive' (not Barens word!) to show their teeth to judge in ring :) and this is not correspondant to the standard he wrote.
Hmmm ... we go off the topic :)
