Kintu
« on: June 29, 2010, 09:56 PM »
After a very long wait i am going to pick up my new pup that I've named Kintu in a few days!

The breeder I wanted to go to originally still hasn't become pregnant so I think i've made the right choice is moving else where.

Traveld down to view the pups the other week and managed to get pick of the litter, so Im very happy! the crowns on his ridge are not in line but i am still happy with him.

Here are some pictures of the pups ( I've got mr orange ) and the farther. Will update more pictures when they come.

The farther just had his 10th birthday!

He's adorable!  Obviously he likes carpets!  What is it about rugs and orientals in particular that puppies just love.

It's very dangerous posting puppy pictures around here. Tends to put people in " I want another puppy ! " mode. Way too cute. Best of luck. Keep the pics coming.....

so right about that Vince....gotta shake it...be strong....no.....

Kintu is a lovely puppy...and I think he resembles his dad, at least right now.
What a lucky little guy to have been chosen by you.

Haha thanks. I'm quite fond of The Beatles.

At first Kiah ( the bulldog ) was playing a bit ruff but she has gotten used to him being around now. Still a little jealous sometimes with toys as you can see.

Here are some pictures I took while helping a mate move some stuff and some from today around some ducks.

I am quite happy the way Kintu is growing up. there is a god park down the road from me he gets to play in, around 10 dogs a day and even two Ridgebacks from time to time.

He is still quite reserved with the larger dogs but is becoming more and more confident each day.

Here is a couple of pictures of him under my desk while i work on a rainy day.

He just keeps on growing! I hope he doesn't get too big as I don't want him to have hip/joint problems but he is already 27kgs! Kintu at 4 and a half months.

Very nice looking puppy!  He may be carrying just a little too much weight which makes him look bigger, but I don't think he is any bigger than Misha who is now 5 months; in fact I think Misha's legs are longer.  But then perhaps both puppies are on track to being big dogs! :(

he appears to be a larger framed dog..therefore he will probably be larger.
Excessive weight can cause problems with joints...and other problems too.

Kintu reminds me so much of my old Zack (imported from the UK) when he first arrived.  I think Kintu must have a lot of Engish bloodlines behind him  Check back in his pedigree and see if he has Janak Iannto somewhere way back.  Iannto was exported to NZ around the mid 1990s and was unfortunately poisoned by rat poisoning not long after he arrived.  I loved that dog.  He did so well in the UK.  Are you in the North Island or the South Island?

Do you think he is over weight? from what I can see he isn't he is just growing quick. I think he will be a big dog but I hope not too big as i don't want the health problems that come with that  :-\ I might start putting glucosamine in his food now to help prevent damage

I live in the north island. I haven't got his papers yet  :-\ But i have emailed the breeder and they are on there way so I will check for you!

If it makes a difference here is the website of the breeder www.kalmara.com

You are so lucky to live in such a beautiful area.  One of my favorite spots in the whole world!

I don't think Kintu is too fat, but perhaps you could cut back on his food just a bit.  At this age there is a lot of loose skin and it's hard to tell what is skin and what is excess without putting hands on.  He should be starting to muscle up by now.  I wouldn't start supplementing yet, but make sure you are feeding a good quality kibble.  I give Misha 1000 mgs of Ester C, a fish oil tablet and a Vitamin tablet daily and he is fed California Natural lamb and rice with a low protein content.  Seems to do well on it though he would prefer the other dogs' food which has a higher protein content.   If you have him on puppy food, I would take him off it now.  I personally don't feed puppy food after about 10 weeks and I have never had skeletal problems.  With a heavy puppy, you need to be careful with the amount of exercise, particularly stairs and jumping on and off structures.

I looked at the pedigrees, and while I recognize some of the kennel names, I don't see any English kennels there, but then I believe the Janak dogs were sent out to NZ about 20 years ago so they probably would be even further back.

Ridgebacks come in many styles.  The Europeans tend to be a heavier dog while the Americans tend to be lighter boned and "racier".  The Australians are a mix because of all the different imports and the Africans are also mixed depending on what area of Africa they live.

Kintu is a lovely little dog.  Reminds me so much of Zack.

Kintu got an allergic reaction to something, not sure what as I was in my bed trying to get over a cold. 5 minutes before I found him like this he was fine (pictures were after the vet don't worry.)

Needless to say I freaked out and ran him 100 odd meters down the road to where a vet is located where he got two injections. Just got to wait it out now.

I think I will get a allergy test on him to see what I should look out for, I can't have this happening all the time.

His eye just blewwww up and got spots all over his body. Well I thought you might be interested in what he looked like!

Poor boy!  Looks like he got stung by something. Good idea to keep some Benadryl handy as this can happen a lot.  Spider bites are the worst, but he could have gotten into an ant's nest also.  Even stinging nettles can cause a rash like that.

I was going to say that because it started on one side rather than equally on both sides that it was likely caused by something external -- bugs or plants -- rather than ingested.
And yes, Benadryl can work miracles.

Kintu was great the next morning. Good thing about NZ is there is nothing really poisonous animal/insect wise, our ants are far to small to bite and the only spider that can cause us harm is as bad as a bee sting.

But the day after i found three bee's inside all at once so i figure they were the culprits as i haven't seen one for about a year.

Thanks for the tip on benadryl, Turns out we had some all a long, sigh.

if you plan on hiking away from a vet...Carry a couple Epi pens in your kit.  Your vet can write a script for them.
Bees/Wasps are exceptionally angry as the weather begins to cool (at least in my area) - some of the worst are the ones that burrow into the ground and around wood piles.

fyi, according to VetMed.com the recommended dosage for dogs is one milligram for each pound that your dog weighs. You should ONLY give it every 8 hours - Unless prescribed by vet.

Kintu is doing great. 8 and a half months old now at 100 pounds! he is getting bigger every week!

He is a big woose but has just started to develop some guarding instincts. And true to his lion baying heritage he really dislikes out cat and wont stop barking at him ( hes an evil thing though )

Kintu is very handsome Dane! You did the right thing by taking him to the vet. I know how scary this looks, although it is rarer for dogs to go into systemic anaphylaxis (where the throat closes) than humans, it is a terrifying thought. Its very likely that the oral benadryl would not have been enough by kintu so again, good thing you got him to the vet. They likely gave him injectible benadryl (diphenhydramine) and a steroid. Also, giving him benadryl orally may have made it a bit harder for the vet to calculate the dosage he would get injectibly which acts way faster. So kudos to you!

Also, for everyone reccomending benadryl, please be aware, they now make all kinds of beandryl including cold and sinus ones which has acetominophen in it and can be highly toxic to dogs. Make sure the only ingredient on the back listed is diphenhydramine HCL. It is a very safe drug and Sandra you are right, the dose is about 1 mg/lb. Its also very rare for a vet to prescribe an epi pen. Unfortunately, its not something that has caught on in vet med yet. I forgot why but will have to find out.

An update on Kintu.

He is alive and well but had taken a big spill in front of a car about 3 months ago breaking the two main bones in his left front leg. He is back to normal now after a plate and 5 screws but still has to take it pretty slow for a little longer

He has just turned One and is a pretty big boy! ( well i think so ) weighing in at 110 pounds.

He has defiantly come into his own now being a great guard dog stopping people coming into our property that he doesn't know ( huge bark on him ) and greeting everyone else with lots of licks

just a few more photos to share.
