Couch Rubbing and Other Cat-Like Behaviours

Sometimes I think my 5 month old Nala acts like a cat.  She loves rubbing herself on the sides of our couches - both the leather and microfibre ones.  I am not sure if she does this for fun (she looks like she's really enjoying it) or if it's out of necessity (itchiness), or maybe a bit of both.  She also loves standing in between our legs and rubbing herself back and forth on our legs when she greets us.  I've also seen her under the coffee table where she arches her back up like a cat and almost tries to lift the table up.  Her coat was shedding a lot when she was eating Orijen large breed puppy and we've since switched her to California Natural Chicken and Rice Puppy because her stomach couldn't take the rich Orijen food.  She seems to be shedding less but she still loves rubbing.

Anyone else's Ridgebacks do this?

Maximus rubs and leans against us... he greets us, asks for attention and complains of boredom this way. Sometimes I think he just likes his body to be close to ours. We call him our giant kitty.

Ripley also loves to go through our legs!  She will go through countless times so either her head is in front or her butt.  She loves a good butt scratch when she goes through.  She's overly friendly and thinks everyone's her friend so it is slightly embarrasing when she tries to go through a strangers legs.

Duke runs through our legs ALL the time.  We call it the "carwash".  He does it when we come home as a greeting and also when he wants attention.  I think it's adorable, but he's getting so tall that i just might not work out for him anymore! haha.  He also is a "leaner".  So cute.

So funny to hear your stories about the leg rubbing and I'm so glad I'm not the only one! I'm going to chalk it up to a "Ridgeback" thing.

& they are the same the world over. Alyss loves to play that game, even if you are sitting down. She especially likes to have a massage along the spine as she goes through our legs & has the stupidest look on her face when she does it.

Just been reading through some threads & had to comment on this one.
My 3 yr old RR does this all the time & does the most amazing cat like stretches. I thought she was just quirky as our other ridgeback never did this but Belle our new pup does it as well.

Our 10 MO does this daily, almost as a morning routine... stretch and rub on the couch.  They're certainly quirky but adorable.

Yup .. Safi does the same thing .. rubbing against the couch and pushing herself between our legs. She really seems to like pushing her face between the cushions when she really gets going Glad to hear it is probably normal as she only started doing it about a month ago and she is just hitting 15 months old.

I've had to add cleaning the corners of the walls in our house to my weekly routine.  From Duke height down, the walls are BLACK because he rubs on them like a cat.  He cracks me up.

My girl does this too!! She goes thru our legs over and over again when greeting us when we come home, or any time she seems to want some extra attention. I call it the "Ridgeback Hug". And she LOVES the butt scratching that comes with it!!!

Steve - that's so funny about the face burying. Nala does that too - she loves burrowing her face into corners, people's armpits, crotches, cushions. 

Susan - I love that name "Ridgeback hug". None of my other dogs did the leg rubbing thing but it seems our Ridgies love it!
